Rationale for My Approach

Social Contract

Developing a social contract in my room is a very essential component of my classroom management plan.  When creating a social contract, the students make the rules and this in turn gives students power.  Students also make rules that the teacher must follow.  It allows for them to feel important and gives them a say in the classroom environment.  These choices respect a student's dignity because they give the students a chance to work in a classroom democracy instead of a dictatorship.  Above all, the social contract makes students become more accountable for their own behavior and helps them realize that there are consequences for their behaviors.  This realization will lead to the development of responsibility.

Developing a sense of trust is an essential element in the classroom.  It allows for a relationship to be built between the teacher and the student.  Trust facilitates productivity and its absence impedes progress(Marzano, 2003). A mutual form of respect is created as a result of this.  It is also important that a teacher gets to know each and every one of his/her students.  Showing students that you value their interests, cultures, and life experiences helps foster healthy relationships (Marzano, 2003).

A classroom must have clear and concise rules so that students know what is expected of them.  This, in turn, allows them to see that the choices they are going to make will have consequences.  Students with self-management skills make appropriate choices, guide and discipline themselves and work willingly (Harmin, 1998).  When rules are broken, the teacher should provide appropriate consequences instead of punishment.  Punishment does not protect a student's dignity, but instead hurts it.  By giving consequences that are directly related to the rule, it will help the student learn that he/she must demonstrate the appropriate behavior next time.

The use of praise is very important in the classroom because it allows for the students to feel good about themselves.  I feel that a student should be recognized when they are doing something worth praising.  By taking the time to recognize them, it provides students with a good feeling and further motivates them to want to demonstrate appropriate behaviors.

Above all, I want to create a positive learning environment for my students.  In doing this, I want to teach lessons in which the students can relate to and plan activities that are enjoyable for them.  By teaching engaging content, it makes learning more meaningful to the students.  This in turn, motivates students to learn and makes them want to succeed in the classroom.
